2012 DMOR/HMOR UNDUCTION CEREMONY

April 23, 2012

Dear DMOR/HMOR Ladies and Gentlemen of the 16th Infantry Regiment:

Please accept our apologies for this late notice but we have just received notification of the timing of the DMOR/HMOR induction ceremony, and are just now finalizing and coordinating details with the active duty units in order for us to give you some useful information for your planning purposes pertaining to this year's Regimental Week and DMOR Investiture.

A dinner hosted by the 1-16 IN will be held 1800 hours (6:00 PM) on the evening of Monday, June 11, 2012 at the Courtyard by Marriot, Junction City. Due to the Monday dinner time, it is encouraged that your travel plans be arranged for you and your party to arrive well in advance of the dinner, possibly arrive on the day before, which is Sunday, June 10, 2012.

The DMOR/HMOR Investiture ceremony will be 10:00 - 11:00 AM, Tuesday, June 12, 2012 in the 1-16IN Headquarters Conference Room.

The l-16 IN Commanding Officer, LTC and Mrs. Roger Crombie will hold a social/dinner at their quarters. The time and date of this event is yet to be determined.

In keeping with the Commanding General's intent, all of the regiments in the lst Infantry Division will be celebrating alongside the entire lst ID during Victory Week at Ft Riley, 11-14 June, 2012. That means that events and activities will focus not just upon the veterans of the regiments, but upon the Soldiers and Families of the active duty component as well. We hope to be able to spend some quality time with our Soldiers from the 1-16 who will conduct our DMOR Investitures, visit displays, etc., but as of now there are no actual planned visits or tours during our visit to Ft Riley.

Planning continues with LTC Roger Crombie, 1-16INF and the S1, 1LT James Fiala. They are doing a great job staying ahead of the curve. When final details of each event is received, the information will be disseminated to all DMOR/HMOR and previous DMOR/HMOR in email newsletters and when necessary, by separate notification either email or telephone.

There are limited rooms reserved at the Courtyard by Marriott Hotel in Junction City, Kansas. It is suggested that attendees make reservations at the hotel as soon as possible. The reservation desk telephone number is: 785-210-1500. Please let the reservation clerk know you are with the 16ft Infantry DMOR program for discount price of $81.00 per night. Due to the late notification and arrangements of reservations, the number of reserved rooms are as follows: Sunday, June 10 — 40 rooms, Monday, June 11 — 34 rooms, Tuesday, June 12 — 40 rooms, Wednesday, June 13 — 40 rooms, and Thursday, June 14 — 29 rooms available. It is suggested that you make reservations promptly. Reservation arrangements may be made at the hotel beginning, Monday, April 23, 2012. Please note that if needed, there is a Best Western nearby.

Equally critical is that we know who is arriving and departing by air from Kansas City International Airport and/or the Manhattan, Kansas airport. It is anticipated that the Iron Rangers will schedule shuttle service between airports, based on your arrival and departure locations times. Please let us know, as soon as possible, the date, time, airline flight number, arrival and departure times, and finally, the number in your party. Please either email or contact us by phone as soon as you have your travel information. Contact numbers are listed below to facilitate your travel to Junction City.

Much has already been done and much more is left to do before we meet. We will continue to work on the details but with the information provided to you in this notice, you will be able to make and lock down travel plans and room reservations for DMOR and Victory Week.

US Infantry Silver Dollar – National Infantry Museum & Soldier Center

A couple years ago we were guests of the then recently opened National Infantry Museum & Soldier Center located in Columbus, Georgia right next to Fort Benning. It is a truly incredible place commemorating the legacy of our US Infantry soldiers through the generations. We happen to be on their mailing list and got advance notice of this commemorative, US Tender silver dollar issued by the US Mint only this year. The museum gets $10 from the coin sales, and even if you aren't a numismatist, if you have any connection to the US Infantry, this is something you will want to jump on quick, because when the 350,000 are minted and sold, they are gone. Congress requested this coin back in 2008, so we won't see another for a long time. This is an official heads up from GunsAmerica. ( Click Here to Read More )

BANDIDOS RECEIVE AWARDS FOR ACTION IN VIETNAM

"Reports on 10 August 1969 of a large NVA force moving from theirsanctuary in the Fish Hook area West of Loc Ninh, Vietnam caused a need for immediate action. Bandido Charlie’s 2nd Platoon, led by LT George Perabo, air assaulted into the area and engaged the enemy. The ensuing fight scattered the NVA forces and yielded 5 prisoners who provided good information regarding enemy plans.

On 12 August, acting on the intelligence from those prisoners, LTC Ken Cassels led Alpha and Bandido Charlie companies plus Delta company, 5/7th Cavalry from the 1st Air Cavalry Division to the rubber plantation West of Quan Loi. A multi-Battalion size force from the 272nd Regiment, 9th NVA Division, dug in with anti-tank and aircraft weapons was waiting.

The ensuing 11 hour battle was a ferocious Infantry fight without any supporting air, artillery, or gunship assets allowed. St the end of the day the NVA were driven from the field, back to their Cambodian safe haven.

In such a battle, over a battlefield covering several square kilometers of tree covered rolling hills, many heroic actions, by soldiers of both forces, go unrecognized. This fight was no exception. Fortunately, because of the platform provided by our Bandido Charlie Association, enough eye witness testimony became available to begin a process to see if long overdue awards for heroism could be approved for six Bandidos. The process took three and a half years culminating with the following awards being approved:

The Silver Star for Gallantry in Action is awarded to:

Alfredo G. Herrera,         Douglas J. Ludlow

Ronald W. Mackedanz,   Melvin McElreath

The Bronze Star for Valor for Valorous Achievement is awarded to:

Stephan Biernacki,   Roger Haynie

These awards will be presented by the Commanding General, First Infantry Division, or his designated representative based on deployment contingencies, in the 16th Infantry Regiment area at 10:00 AM, Friday, March 9, 2012, Ft Riley, Kansas.

The Command Team of the 1st Battalion, 16th Infantry has invited any Bandidos, who wish to join us there to welcome our modern day Bandidos home from their recently completed tour in Afghanistan with the Joint Special Command and to celebrate the award of these long overdue medals to our Vietnam era Bandidos. The 16th Infantry Ball to welcome these soldiers will be held at 6:00 PM, Friday March 9, 2012 at the Hilton Garden Inn, Manhattan, Kansas."

"I now know why men who have been to war yearn to reunite. Not to tell stories or look at old pictures. Not to laugh or weep. Comrades gather because they long to be with the men who once acted at their best; men who suffered and sacrificed, who were stripped of their humanity. I did not pick these men. They were delivered by fate and the military. But I know them in a way I know no other men. I have never given anyone such trust. They were willing to guard something more precious than my life. They would have carried my reputation, the memory of me. It was part of the bargain we all made, the reason we were so willing to die for one another. As long as I have memory, I will think of them all, every day. I am sure that when I leave this world, my last thought will be of my family and my comrades. Such good men."
